National Service Scheme (NSS)

             National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS is an extension of activities to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in education institutions, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.

The symbol of the National Service Scheme is based on the ‘Rath‘ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

 Motto

Not Me But You”. Our college NSS team aims to “Responsible Citizens through social service” among the student volunteers.

Aim and Objectives

            The aim of NSS programme is to inculcate social commitment in students thereby promoting  a bias less service to the society; to Provide help to the needy and ensuring an enhanced and dignified standard of living; to promote experiential learning among students where they learn from the community and become socially sensitive and responsible individuals.  The specific objectives are

• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration.
• Understand themselves in relation to their community.
• Develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities
• Apply their education in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.

NSS Day

            NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhiji, the Father of Nation. Therefore, 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.

Activities

            NSS programme was introduced in our college in the year 2007.  Our College has 3 NSS units with 300 students (100 students per unit) headed by 3 Programme Officers.  The volunteers are mainly from I and II year Under Graduation students.  NSS activities will be organized throughout the year.  The college is a pioneer in providing service to the community through NSS Volunteers.   

• As soon as they get enrolled they are given an orientation about NSS, its origin, motto, symbol, importance of NSS activities and its involvement, etc.
• Observation of important days as specified by Bharathidasan University will be organized with eminent lectures by inviting personalities from relevant fields. 
• Blood Donation Camp and Eye Care Camp will be regularly organized every year.
• The entire college campus will also be cleaned by student volunteers regularly. 
• The NSS Volunteers do get involved in the celebration of Independence Day and Republic Day and they have a major role in maintaining discipline during Annual Day, Convocation, Sports Day and so on.
• Each NSS unit adopts a nearby village for 3 years and they do extension activities including awareness programmes in that village.  Every year around 50 student volunteers (150 students from 3 units) from each unit participate in special camp for 7 days generally in even semester. 
• During the special camps in the adopted village, the student volunteers involve in garbage cleaning, tree plantation in the village, general survey about socio-economic condition, education in schools and colleges, occupation, children, elderly support, women empowerment including Self Help Groups, youth in the village and motivation/awareness programmes are undertaken. 
• Based on the survey, awareness programmes such as Heath and Nutrition, importance of Sanitation, Menstrual Hygiene of Adolescents, Mental Health of elderly, Women empowerment will be conducted with the involvement of local people especially Panchayat President. 
• Several competitions will also be conducted for children, adolescents, women and elderly for which the prizes will be distributed in the valedictory ceremony of special camps.  In these rural camps the student volunteers learn group living, team work, self reliance, self cooking, self care, social service and thus become responsible person in the family and responsible citizen in the society.

            The students of I and II year students may get enrolled in NSS unit simply by enrolling/registering themselves by NSS Enrolment Proforma through the Programme Officer concerned
